More than 1,000 US coronavirus deaths, near 70,000 cases: tracker

Spain has recorded 3,434 deaths from coronavirus, the health ministry announced Wednesday - making it the country with the second highest death toll in the world.

The US now has more confirmed cases of coronavirus than any other country with at least 82,404 positive tests. The number of confirmed cases has exceeded 451,000, the USA university reports.

As the number of infections around the globe reached a half-million and world leaders held a video summit to grapple with how long to keep the economy at a standstill to help flatten the rising curve, the damage to people's livelihoods and their well-being started to come into focus. Per New York City's health department, there were more than 32,700 known cases in the state, with more than 20,000 in New York City alone.

Calling for a unity government, he added, "Knesset members, citizens of Israel, right now our nation needs unity, needs a unity government".


Earlier, Trump had advised people not to gather in groups of more than 10, one day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended no gatherings with 50 people or more for the next eight weeks. Johns Hopkins' numbers are slightly higher, citing upward of 480,000 cases worldwide and upward of 21,500 deaths. He added that experts expect the number to increase as critically ill patients who have been on ventilators for several days succumb to the virus.

That includes nearly 23,000 deaths and almost 121,000 recovered cases, the Baltimore, Maryland school running tally indicated. Washington state has reported 100 and New Jersey 44, respectively.
