US Senate passes $2tn stimulus package against COVID-19

The bill includes $1,200 in one-time direct payments to Americans earning less than $75,000 per year, plus $500 per child under the age of 17.

The measure cleared the Senate 96-0 after days of tumultuous, sometimes bitter negotiations and debate, as the United States death toll for the pandemic soared past 1,000, with 68,000 confirmed infections.

Friedman said that under the Senate bill the expanded authority for nurses to practice independently would expire 90 days after Baker lifts the state of emergency declaration. "We can not encourage people to make more money in unemployment than we do in employment", South Carolina Sen.

Some Republican senators, including Lindsey Graham of SC, voiced discontent over the expansion of unemployment insurance benefits, arguing that this could discourage people from returning to work.

"Unless this bill is fixed, there is a strong incentive for employees to be laid off instead of going to work". There's a ton of money in this bill for people who need it, but what we're doing now is, every special-interest group in town is trying to get a little bit more - nickling and diming at a time when people are dying, literally dying'. "We should all be on the same page following the lead of the chief executive", said House Majority Leader Ronald Mariano.

"A fight has arrived at our shores". Trump's answer meandered for a long while, and included an unfortunate amount of whining and self-pity, before he eventually said, "I've learned, let's just see what happens because we have to save some of these great companies".

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, reportedly said on Wednesday that he didn't believe the end of the crisis was in sight. You can't outlaw a virus. "Emergency relief. That's what this is".

With this in mind, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's (D-N.Y.) sent out this announcement shortly after reaching a bipartisan agreement on an economic rescue package.

He said Spain made the request to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation which would pass it on to the member-states' armies. With 3,434 fatalities, Spain now has the second-highest death toll globally after Italy's 6,820.

House Democrats must still review the bill, and some House Republicans are wary about the bill's increase in the federal budget deficit and the rushed process by which it was drafted.

During an interview Wednesday, the Democrat lawmaker said the new coronavirus stimulus package will be implemented as soon as possible. "Hopefully we won't need this for three months".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) told reporters Wednesday that she is "optimistic" about the legislation, and said no decision had been made about when the House would try to take up the legislation if it clears the Senate as expected.

In 2020 dollars, the bill is almost double the size of the 2009 Recovery Act passed in the wake of the financial crisis and almost triple the 1933 New Deal approved at the depths of the Great Depression.

Calling it a "medical crisis, not a financial crisis", Trump said he wanted to reassure the American public that any decision made on loosening mitigating measures now in place, such as social distancing, would be made using the "best science, the best modeling and the best medical research there is anywhere on Earth".

"Struggling Americans are going to go to their mailboxes and find four-figure checks. Why?"

"'s more money because it pays you...for most workers, their full salaries". She has covered news for since 2014.

The deal includes a $150 billion boost in hospital funding and a $150 billion fund for state and local governments, both pushed for by Democrats. An oversight board and inspector general would be set up to monitor how the funds to large corporations are distributed. Two House members were diagnosed last week with COVID-19, and others are in quarantine. Stock buybacks also would be prohibited. Some $25 billion would be allocated for public transit.
