Lockdown Not Enough, Use This Time To Attack Coronavirus

The global death toll due to the novel coronavirus on Wednesday has crossed the 21,000 mark and number of confirmed cases worldwide soared past 450,000, reported news agency AFP.

This window of opportunity was created by those countries and regions which introduced unprecedented "lockdown" measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted at a daily briefing, reminding that these measures will not extinguish epidemics on their own.

He further said: "We call on all countries who have introduced so-called lockdown measures, to use this time to attack the virus".

"I know he's doing all he can", Tedros said, noting he and Trump spoke recently. Because fighting this pandemic needs political commitment and commitment at the highest level possible.

He added that wide-scale efforts to slow the coronavirus should have started weeks ago.

Backing from the Bloc Quebecois assures the government bill's passage. This is what an "effective Opposition" looks like, he said.

On India, Tedros said: "India has the capacity, and it's very important and good to see that India is taking early measures". "We had been saying to the world the window of opportunity is narrowing and the time to act was actually more than a month ago, two months ago".

The WHO had warned on Tuesday the United States could become the global epicenter of the pandemic, as India announced a full 24-hour, nationwide lockdown in the world's second-most populous country. "Asking people to stay at home and shutting down population movement is buying time and reducing the pressure on health systems", he said at a news conference in Geneva. But on their own, these measures will not extinguish epidemics.

"First, expand, train and deploy your health care and public health workforce".

"The question is how large a price we will pay", he said. With 7,503 deaths, Italy is the most affected country ahead of Spain with 3,434 and China with 3,281, the country where the initial outbreak occurred.
