Apple may delay iPhone 12 launch 'until 2021'

Additionally developing a concrete "iPhone 12" prototype was originally slated for early March but was delayed due to travel restrictions between the United States and China.

iPhone fans dying for a 5G upgrade might be kept waiting a little bit longer thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. The story credits "sources familiar with the matter" with the scoop, and says the possible change is tied to how the coronavirus pandemic has altered global demand and threw a toolbox of wrenches into the product development schedule. According to a new report by Nikkei, Apple has been having internal discussions about the possibility of delaying the launch of the iPhone 12 "by months". "They need the first ‌5G iPhone‌ to be a success". The company reportedly instructed suppliers to plan to make 100 million units for 2020. All should feature OLED displays and support for 5G networks. The Tim Cook-led company is also said to be monitoring the outbreaks in the U.S. and Europe, which are Apple's two most important markets that account for more than half of the sales driven by iPhone. This means that their usual Q4 results which fit well with their new iPhone release will have a significant drop in revenue year on year. Similarly, a prototype for the new models was planned to be developed from early March.

"Apple will make a final decision around May at the latest, given the fluid situation globally", another source told Nikkei.
