Andrew Cuomo: $2 trillion congressional deal would be 'terrible' for NY

The governor said he's been asking for a "surge" health care force, and he said 40,000 medical professionals have already signed up.

"Once you address that hotspot with that intensity and intense equipment, intense personnel, then shift to the next hotspot", Cuomo said. But, the theory is: "given the density that we're dealing with, it spreads very quickly, but if you reduce the density you can reduce the spread very quickly", Cuomo said.

Speaking at a White House briefing, officials said anyone who recently left NY should self-quarantine at home for 14 days to prevent the virus from infecting those in other regions.

New York's 30,811 COVID-19 cases are almost 10 times more cases than the nearest states - New Jersey, California, Washington and MI - have seen, though Cuomo said that the social distancing efforts may be slowly working. Cuomo has said doctors would start trialling the use of one ventilator for two patients.

The coronavirus has now killed 385 New Yorkers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday - with a startling leap of 100 fatalities in the span of just 24 hours.

The White House and congressional leaders, meanwhile, looked close to a deal on a US$2-trillion economic stimulus package that would include one-time cash payments to Americans and bailout money for companies hurt by the economic shutdown.

"We can tell New Yorkers that help is on the way", said Schumer. "That's the worst news you can have".

Democrats, including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, earlier criticized the Republican president for suggesting he would reopen the nation's economy by Easter in order to spare businesses as much pain as possible.

Donald Trump tweeted on Wednesday that he had a good conversation with Cuomo, who later thanked Trump and his team for their cooperation. But New York didn't prepare for a pandemic as serious as the 1918 Spanish flu, nor did the federal government or anyone "in the world", Cuomo added.

People are being told to self-isolate at home during the pandemic and the possibility of being evicted must be prevented, he said. Landlord will be able to restrict the use of common areas, such as laundry rooms, by tenants or guests, as well.

NY has tested over 122,000 people for the virus, including 18,650 tests just yesterday.

The state saw an increase of 6,448 confirmed cases overnight.

"We've had 11 deaths in Los Angeles including among young people", he said, with the city believed to be in a timeline about six days behind NY. And it's not coming back, not for the next few months. "We're gonna lose some people".

Governor Andrew Cuomo says he's been working closely with President Trump's son-in-law and top White House aide Jared Kushner to get NY ventilators as coronavirus cases continue to escalate. New York City alone tallied 17,856 cases and 199 deaths.

In California, where 51 people have died and 2,200 tested positive, Governor Gavin Newsom said fully half the confirmed cases were between the ages of 18 and 49, figures he said are "a reminder for everybody to take this seriously".

NY officials are scrambling to equip hospitals with basic necessities to combat the virus.

The governor said the program is in direct response to city parks, which he admitted have become a "problem", as many individuals are not following social distancing rules, and the density of people puts them and others at greater risk of contracting the coronavirus.

Cuomo said Wednesday that as many as 140,000 hospital beds may be needed in a state with 53,000.

The Jacob Javits Center - a landmark convention center in midtown Manhattan - is being repurposed as a temporary hospital for Covid-19, along with four other sites selected by the army corps of engineers.
