Spain registers more than 700 deaths from coronavirus

The Madrid metropolitan area, where the outbreak initially started in Spain, has the most cases of any Spanish region. Its number of cases soared by 7,973.

In France, which instituted a nationwide lockdown on March 17, the number of new infections grew at an average rate of 26 per cent per day throughout March, but on Tuesday the rate has slowed dow to an average 15 per cent.

Spain is now reporting COVID-19 has killed more than 3,400 people, making it the second European country with a death toll higher than in China, where the new coronavirus was first detected in late 2019. And in Spain, the death toll eclipsed that of China, where the outbreak began.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister K. Palaniswami had announced a series of measures in the Assembly to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state.

The elderly are among the most vulnerable to the coronavirus, and Spain's nursing home system has been hit particularly hard.
