Government announced swathe of new restrictions

Speaking today, he said further social distancing measures need to be implemented to further slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Announcing the new measures at a press conference this Tuesday afternoon, Taoiseach Varadker said that all theatres, pubs, clubs, leisure centres, gyms, hairdressers, betting offices, casinos, bingo halls, libraries and other similar outlets are to shut.

All non-essential retail outlets are to close to the public from midnight tonight.

"All cafes and restaurants should limit supply to take away and delivery only", he said.

All churches and other places of worship are to restrict the number of people attending. All playground and holiday caravan parks are closed. "All sporting events are cancelled, including those held behind closed doors".

In relation to public transport, people are advised to only use it if absolutely necessary.

"The Gardai will increase interventions where venues are not complying with or groups of people are not complying with social distancing", he said.

He said factories and construction sites could remain open, if they maintained social distancing. Social gatherings outdoors should be limited to no more than four people unless they are from the same household.

"I'm asking you to stay at home if at all possible".

The US agreed on legislation to help businesses, workers and the health care system amidst the coronavirus pandemic . The day was filled with back-and-forth in the Senate over the House Democrats' financial stimulus package.

A Wage Subsidy Scheme will also be put in place aimed at encouraging employers to keep workers on their payroll.

This will be capped at €38,000 salary a year or €410 a week from the government.

The Cabinet this morning approved emergency measures to freeze rents, prevent evictions, make it easier for healthcare professionals to re-register and return to work and allow former members to return at rank they left, under an approved framework agreement with private hospitals, which will operate as public hospitals for duration of the emergency.
