France tightens lockdown as death toll increases

The nationwide lockdown orders all in France to stay inside except for essential trips outside such as shopping.

A lockdown remains the only viable option to contain the Covid-19 outbreak in France and it should remain in place for at least six weeks, the country's scientific council on the virus has said, calling for stronger enforcement.

Out of more than 414,200 confirmed cases, the death toll now exceeds 18,500, while over 107,800 have recovered. [Mr Macron] said this in essence, because it would cause more pain than healing."The French President's meeting with religious leaders concluded the Christian holiday of Easter, the Jewish holiday of Passover and the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan would probably not be held this year because of the deadly epidemic".

France has been under a strict lockdown since March 17, when Macron announced restrictive measures, including fines for people violating the rules.

People in France do not seem to understand "how serious this pandemic is", he lamented. Some 100,000 police officers are deployed to enforce the movement restriction.

Outings to seek medical care have also been restricted to "urgent care or an appointment with a doctor or going to the emergency room" in addition to get care for chronic diseases. Salomon said health authorities would soon be able to tabulate data coming from retirement homes, which will likely trigger a more dramatic increase in registered fatalities. Nice and a number of other cities have already imposed curfews. The World Health Organization says that the novel coronavirus cases across the globe have exceeded 330,000, with more than 15,000 deaths. Philippe said the extension would also apply to artists and entertainers as they are not allowed to perform during the lockdown.
