Meanwhile, preparations for the delayed Games will continue in Tokyo, with the city's governor, Yuriko Koike, joining Abe's discussions with International Olympic Committee head Bach. On March 3, the company said it had surpassed $1.25 billion in Tokyo Olympics ad sales-a new ad revenue record for the games-and had sold out 90% of its national ad inventory for the Summer Games, along with its Tokyo Paralympics ad inventory.

The Games, which were scheduled to run from July 24 through August 9, will be rescheduled "to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athlete, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the global community", the IOC said in a statement.

The statement concluded with a message of hope: "While we navigate these uncertain times, an Olympic Games in 2021 will give us all hope and the opportunity to come together in celebration of good health".

Citing the World Health Organization chief saying the pandemic is "accelerating" and the increase in cases by the hour, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee said in a joint statement that the Olympics will be postponed to next year.

Irish Olympic chief executive Sherrard said he recognised that Japan had been put in a hard position.

Robertson told the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday: "We are pretty much there, I think a postponement is pretty much inevitable".

Pound also told USA Today the ramifications of postponing the Games would be "immense".

The municipal funeral home announced it would stop collecting bodies beginning Tuesday because of a shortage of protective gear. She did not say what had caused those deaths.

As for how the postponement will affect the company's Olympics ad sales, an NBCUniversal spokesperson said in a statement, "NBCUniversal is actively working with our advertising partners to navigate this postponement, and we're exploring all options to best serve their brands and our consumers this year, and into 2021".

Organizers repeatedly dismissed calls to delay or cancel the games earlier this year but in recent days had signaled a willingness to consider postponement.

The delaying of the Games to 2021 means next year's scheduled World Athletics Championships in OR are now likely to be moved to 2022, with World Athletics confirming on Tuesday that it already has held talks with the OR organising committee about securing an alternative date.

Canada and Australia have already announced they would not be sending athletes to Tokyo, while USA Swimming called on US officials to do the same.

IOC President Thomas Bach sent a letter to athletes Sunday explaining the decision and why it might take so long. "I also know that this rational approach may not be in line with the emotions many of you have to go through".

The 2020 Summer Olympics was scheduled to run from July 24 to August 9.

The statement added that "cancellation is not on the agenda".
