Italy may have 10 times the number of virus cases than officially reported, the emergency chief Angelo Borrelli told daily La Repubblica in an interview.

As of today, Italy had a total of 59,138 virus cases compared to China's 81,496.

Health authorities have cautioned that it will be a few more days before they will know if Italy is at the beginning of a positive trend.

Italy has reported 743 new coronavirus deaths, as cases increased by 5,249 on Tuesday.

The coronavirus pandemic had claimed 6,077 lives in locked down Italy by Monday, with the cumulative number of confirmed cases reaching 63,927, according to new figures released by the Civil Protection Department. Woe to whoever lets down the guard, " Health Minister Roberto Speranza said of Monday's numbers.

A senior national health official, Silvio Brusaferro, resisted being too optimistic, saying the improvements were due to actions taken at the beginning of the month, not in recent days.

In Milan, the capital of Lombardy, by far Italy's worst-hit region, local health officials expressed cautious optimism as day-to-day increases of positive test results and new hospital admissions were smaller, but they expressed renewed worry about the need for additional intensive care beds.

Those who have not travelled overseas in the past two weeks will still be subject to 14 days of quarantine, Ho said. China had 39 new cases on Sunday, the National Health Commission said, down from 46 a day earlier.

However, the number of new cases have also begun to decrease, raising hope that perhaps the most aggressive phase of the outbreak in the country could be passing. Over 100,000 people have recovered, including almost 60,000 in China and more than 7,000 in Italy.

Italy has suffered the world's deadliest outbreak of the respiratory pandemic, with 62 percent of the fatalities registered in Lombardy, the country's most populous and wealthy region.

Despite the overwhelming growing fear of the fatal COVID-19 in Italy people have continued to disregard the precautionary measures proposed by the government.

The numbers from the United States are also similar to those of Italy's from about 20 days ago.

"Maybe this is the first positive day of this very hard month", Gallera said.

Most other European nations and some USA states have followed Italy's example and imposed their own containment and social distancing measures created to stop the spread.
