It has 318 confirmed cases of coronavirus and four deaths, Reuters reported.

Yet in the last fortnight, the number of cases has more than doubled to 356 after locals and foreign residents flooded back once the pandemic spread to Europe and North America.

Chin Chun-wing, vice chairman of the Hong Kong Bar and Pub Association, said the government did not consult or notify the industry before announcing the measure.

Yesterday, Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced a raft of measures created to stop the upward trend.

"So, we are going to suggest, as it requires legislative work, around 8,600 restaurants, bars and clubs with liquor licenses to temporarily suspend the sale of alcohol by amending the law", Lam, who was wearing a face mask, told a news conference.

Also, the Hong Kong airport will halt all transit arrivals for two weeks starting Wednesday.

The new measures, which represent the tightest border restrictions yet since the outbreak of the coronavirus, come after Hong Kong implemented similar requirements for anyone arriving in the SAR.

China had 39 new cases on Sunday, the National Health Commission said, down from 46 a day earlier.

Beijing stepped up measures to contain imported infections, diverting all arriving global flights from yesterday to other cities, including Shanghai and as far west as Xian, where passengers will undergo virus screening. Those who have not travelled overseas in the past two weeks will still be subject to 14 days of quarantine, Ho said.
