Coronavirus cases in India rise to 519

At least 107 fresh cases of the deadly COVID-19 virus were reported in the country since last night.

India has 492 reported confirmed coronavirus cases and nine deaths so far. Singer Kanika Kapoor, who had tested positive for Covid-19, was charged by the Uttar Pradesh police under all the three sections for attending parties upon her return from the United Kingdom and not going into self-quarantine.

Maharashtra reported 89 cases so far, including three deaths.

Apart from those classed as performing essential services, people venturing out could be arrested, fined up to Rs 1,000 and jailed for as much as six months. In Sikkim, the lockdown will begin on Wednesday at 6 am.

Three states - Uttar Pradesh (India's most populous state), Madhya Pradesh and Odisha have imposed partial lockdown in certain areas. Early containmentIndia has tested around 20,000 individuals, and health authorities have said the virus has remained largely restricted to those who travelled to affected areas and others who came into direct contact with them.

There are 28 states, eight UTs and in the country. Over 40,000 people are infected in Italy and over 3,000 people have died forcing the country to go into a complete lockdown.

The central government has also asked states to enforce additional restrictions, if necessary, leading to imposition of curfew in Punjab and Maharashtra. Issuing a message to people of Maharashtra, through social media, Thackeray said, "Today I am compelled to announce a statewide curfew".

The other states are: Kerala, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Ladakh, Tripura, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Daman Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Karnataka and Assam.

Narendra Modi, the prime minister, said many Indians were not taking the lockdown seriously.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba wrote a letter to State Chief Secretaries urging them to monitor the situation round the clock.

Faced with unprecedented situation arising out of the coronavirus breakout, the Centre and state governments have made a decision to take extraordinary measures and impose restrictions. India has already banned worldwide flights for a week from Sunday.

Amid rising cases, the national task force for COVID-19 constituted by Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has recommended hydroxy-chloroquine as a preventive medication for high-risk population.

Residents living in 75 districts across the country, including in major cities such as the capital New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata have been placed under travel, work and movement restrictions until March 31.
