Australia's New South Wales sees big spike in coronavirus cases

"Many other cruise ships have since been implicated in SARS-CoV-2 transmission". It is thanks to these studies that we know that we must stay away from other people, including our loved ones, to minimize the risk of infection.

The alarming discovery came in a study of the bug's terrifying spread in cruise ships, with the CDC calling for further study of the ships.

There have been more than 43,000 confirmed cases in the United States of the infection, also known as COVID-19, which has been blamed for 553 known deaths.

The woman, who was a passenger on the Ruby Princess cruise ship which docked in Sydney, died in hospital on Tuesday morning, taking the national toll to eight. A different "princess, quot;, the Grand Princess, was moored off the California coast after two people who landed tested positive".

All cruise ship passengers disembarking in Sydney will be tested for coronavirus, the NSW health minister has revealed.

The Diamond Princess had more than 700 coronavirus cases. Factors that facilitate spread on cruise ships might include mingling of travelers from multiple geographic regions and the closed nature of a cruise ship environment.

However he repeats his threat that the government will look at "further measures" if people don't behave "responsibly". Free food deliveries will be organised for those stuck inside, as well as medications being brought to their homes.

At the time of the quarantine, the cluster of cases on the Diamond Princess was the largest in the world outside of China. Infectious disease specialist Kentaro Iwata of Kobe University Hospital described onboard efforts to contain the virus as "completely inadequate", with the Guardian reporting that crew saw little effective effort to separate exposed or sick individuals from uninfected ones. "Available statistical models of the Diamond Princess outbreak suggest that 17.9% of infected persons never developed symptoms". A high proportion of asymptomatic infections could partially explain the high attack rate between passengers and cruise ship crews.

Researchers looked at the rooms of infected passengers aboard the Diamond Princess, both those who showed symptoms and those who didn't, according to a study Monday in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The data is not enough "to determine if transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces", the CDC said.

"Although [this] data can not be used to determine whether transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces, further study of fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 aboard cruise ships is warranted", the report said.

Subsequent studies pegged the survival time for coronavirus on cardboard surfaces at up to 24 hours, and on stainless steel surfaces for days.
