Bach made that evident in a letter he wrote to the world's Olympic athletes, urging them to give this issue more time, to never give up hope because it's way too early in the process.

Officials urging a rescheduling of the competition say that the worldwide health crisis not only creates an uneven playing field, but also puts athletes and other staffers under undue physical and mental stress. Another headache is the Olympic village, due to be converted to apartments after the Games.

"Those are the powerhouses in the Olympic movement", said sprinter Manteo Mitchell, a silver medalist at the 2012 London Games and 2020 Olympic hopeful. "We are working very hard, and we are confident that we will have finalized these discussions within the next four weeks".

"It can not be accepted that the IOC is not listening to the number one Olympic sport", Andre Giraud said. Therefore, cancellation is not on the agenda.

The IOC said the scenarios under consideration "relate to modifying existing operational plans for the Games to go ahead on July 24, 2020, and also for changes to the start date of the Games".

The idea of holding the games on schedule has drawn a swelling chorus of objectors.

So too did calls for postponement from USA Swimming and USA Track and Field, as well as a growing cadre of athletes from all over the globe who were disappointed and frustrated, then angry that the International Olympic Committee would encourage them to continue training, despite the fact that doing so would be at odds with the best medical advice coming from the World Health Organization.

The move comes after increasingly fervent calls for the Olympics to be postponed as Covid-19 cases approached the 300,000 mark and the number of deaths exceeded 11,000.

Olympic sprinter Carl Lewis is seen on the sidelines during the first half in the NCAA Cotton Bowl college football game between Penn State and Memphis, December 28, 2019, in Arlington, Texas. "We know how athletes always will sacrifice and do everything possible to achieve their goals, but this only pushes athletes and their coaches to train as best they can, which not only puts their own health at risk, but everyone else's as well".

"This could strengthen the IOC's confidence in the Japanese hosts that the IOC could, with certain safety restrictions, organise Olympic Games in the country whilst respecting its principle of safeguarding the health of everyone involved".

However, a "scaled-down" Games is also set to be considered.

In all, 70 percent of the athletes supported a postponement with another 23 percent saying it would depend on the consequences, according to details supplied by a member of the USOPC Athletes Advisory Council.
