McDonald's to close all restaurants from Monday amid coronavirus outbreak

The company said some restaurants may still continue to offer take-out in areas where a specific need exists, such as locations near hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Restaurants have been forced to shut doors or limit service to delivery and takeaway in many parts of the world in efforts to curb the spread of the highly contagious coronavirus.

We will work with local community groups to responsibly distribute food and drink from our restaurants in the coming days.

The fast-food company, which has 135,000 employees in the United Kingdom and Ireland, said it has taken the "difficult decision" in a statement posted to Twitter - adding that stores will close by that time on Monday "at the latest".

"Thank you to out brilliant employees for the hard work during this incredibly challenging time".

Earlier, however, McDonald's United Kingdom said it was still open providing takeaways, drive-through, and delivery options while ensuring safe conditions for its employees, customers, and couriers.

While restaurants have not been advised to close, the Government has asked all pubs to shut - and those that remain open will be forcibly closed, Health Minister Simon Harris said.

Boris Johnson said the premises should close "as soon as reasonably possible" as he admitted that it was "a huge key" to closing the British social places.

"We look forward to seeing you all again as soon as we can safely reopen".

So far, the restaurant has only announced it will close each of its 1,300 restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland, but not when it expects to reopen.
