Health officials confirmed its first case of the new coronavirus on Saturday in the Australian state of Victoria. while the national government urged people not to travel to Hubei province in China, the epicentre of the outbreak. A U.S. Embassy spokesperson told NPR that "logistical disruptions stemming from restricted transportation and overwhelmed hospitals in the city of Wuhan" fed into the decision.

Hubei's health authorities separately reported 323 new confirmed cases of the virus, which first emerged in the provincial capital, Wuhan, in late December. Many Lunar New Year celebrations have been cancelled.

Outside China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Macao, Hong Kong, France, Australia and the United States have reported confirmed cases of the new coronavirus strain, and there are media reports of a new case in Canada.

Overseas Chinese tour groups will be suspended from Monday while domestic trips have already been halted since Friday.

In Hong Kong, city leader Carrie Lam said her government would raise its response to the highest emergency level and shutter primary and secondary schools for two more weeks beyond the coming week's Lunar New Year.
