"We are chatting about a virus that does not regard borders", said Italian Wellness Minister Roberto Speranza.

His German counterpart Jens Spahn said the neighbours were taking the situation "very, very seriously" but acknowledged "it could get worse before it gets better".

"The coronavirus has reached Europe for the first time in a situation where we don't understand every chain of infection and they can't be connected directly to China".

"We hope we won't need it but this is one of those situations in which the European Union should".

The governor of the Veneto region told reporters Sunday that the situation was the "worse situation that I had to face" in his political career, adding that it was "probably the worst situation the Veneto region has to face".

According to Borrelli, there are 212 cases in the northern Italian region of Lombardy and 38 in neighboring Veneto. Four new deaths were announced in the two regions - two men and two women, the youngest of whom was 76. The upcoming formal toll update was predicted on Wednesday.

Today the governments of Switzerland, Austria, Spain and Croatia have all reported confirmed cases of the deadly coronavirus and an estimated 1,000 tourists are being held under quarantine in a hotel on Tenerife in the Canary Islands after an Italian doctor who was staying in the hotel tested positive for the virus.

They assortment from health care tests to distinctive doors at airports and tips for self-isolation.

Even before the outbreak of the virus, which triggered a fall of more than 5% on the Milan bourse on Monday, Italy was teetering on the edge of recession, after gross domestic product (GDP) fell 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019.

But on Tuesday night, France's junior transport minister recommended that people avoid traveling to parts of Italy affected by the outbreak.

Wide-ranging measures to halt the spread of the virus have affected tens of millions of people in the north of Italy, with schools closed and cultural and sporting events cancelled.

Production of the latest "Mission: Impossible" film starring Tom Cruise in Venice has been stopped following the outbreak.

The main center of infection in Italy has been the city of Codogno, a city of about 15,000 people about 60 kilometers (35 miles) south of Milan.

On Tuesday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said that the official advice around coronavirus is being updated so that people returning to the United Kingdom from anywhere in northern Italy should self-isolate if they have flu-like symptoms.
