Egypt's ousted president Hosni Mubarak dies

Egypt's ousted president Hosni Mubarak dies

Critics say that during the Mubarak years the government and economy were hobbled by rampant corruption, bureaucratic mediocrity and rights abuses.

Mubarak is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and his sons, Gamal and Alaa.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi attended the service, which was to be followed later in the day by burial at the cemetery in Heliopolis, an upscale Cairo district that was Mubarak's home for most of his rule and where he lived until his death.

Egypt's presidency said in a statement that it mourned the death of Mr Mubarak as a "military leader and war hero" and offered condolences to his family.

"There will be many who will try to highlight Mubarak's war record in 1973; or his keeping the peace with Israel following Sadat's agreement; and a number of other regional geopolitical moves".

Dubbed the "pharaoh" by his detractors, Mubarak had ruled Egypt for 30 years, suppressing dissent and jailing opponents.

Within Egypt, he oversaw slow economic growth.

The funeral of former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak took place in Cairo on Wednesday as his body was flown to a mosque in the city's east by helicopter before the casket was carried out by an honour guard.

Nonetheless, the former president still enjoys a degree of popularity among many Egyptians, who have painted him as a paternal figure.

Coronavirus could see more Serie A games played behind closed doors
The clash in Turin will not be the only game this weekend played behind closed doors. Serie C canceled all games in its A and B leagues, which have teams in the north.

Earlier, Egyptian honour guards carried Mubarak's coffin wrapped in the Egyptian flag on their shoulders into the mosque along with his sons.

Mubarak was in the intensive care unit at a military hospital in Cairo when he died. He was in surgery on January 23, according to a tweet by his son Alaa Mubarak.

He took the reigns of power after the President of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, was assassinated during a military victory parade on October 6, 1981.The military strongman ruled Egypt until he was ousted from power in 2011 by peaceful protests. A family member told AFP that the former ruler died at Cairo's Galaa military hospital.

"On behalf of Israel's citizens and government, I wish to express my deepest sorrow over the passing of President Hosni Mubarak", said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"We knew everything about everyone", said one senior secret police official after Mubarak's overthrow.

Mubarak was born in a rural village in the Nile Delta in 1928.

He spearheaded the ambush of Israeli forces at the start of the 1973 Arab-Israel war. Seated next to Sadat, Mubarak escaped with a minor hand injury as gunmen sprayed the reviewing stand with bullets.

His harsh stance on security enabled him to maintain the peace treaty with Israel. Mubarak ruled the most populous Arab country for almost three decades, serving as a loyal USA ally against Islamic militancy and assisting regional peace efforts.

But in the years since, many Egyptians' aversion to Mubarak has gradually given way to indifference mixed with nostalgia, and many now remember his rule as a bygone period of stability.
