ANA to add up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner Jets

Or nearly. All Nippon Airways (ANA) confirmed this week its intention to acquire 11 787-10 jets and a 787-9, in addition to five options of this variant, in a deal valued at more than $ 5 billion.

The 787-10s will replace Boeing 777s on domestic routes as they retire, although ANA is also the launch customer for the United States manufacturer's new 777X. The Boeing 787-10 will be delivered first through 2024, while the Boeing 787-9 will be delivered after that. The airline previously ordered 83 Boeing 787 aircraft in total, 71 of which are now in service and 12 more will be delivered later.

Once all 20 of the newly ordered airplanes go into service, ANA would operate 103 787s, the firm said.

The order helps update the carrier's fleet, replacing the Boeing 777 series now in operation. Additionally, ANA has been recognized by Air Transport World as "Airline of the Year" three times in the past 10 years - 2007, 2013 and 2018, becoming one of the few airlines winning this prestigious award for multiple times. "These planes represent a significant step forward for ANA as we work to make our entire fleet even more eco-friendly and further reduce noise output".

ANA became the global launch customer of the 787 Dreamliner when it placed its initial order in 2004.

Japan's ANA Holdings Inc will buy 15 Boeing Co 787 Dreamliners worth $5 billion at list prices, it said, the first commercial order announcement for the USA plane maker this year as it wrestles with the grounding of the smaller 737 Max. There are still 11 units to be delivered that are not part of the new agreement.

Boeing's new Boeing 777X boasts larger windows and better temperature control. Meanwhile, since the 787 also generates less sound that the 777, the move will also reduce noise emissions. Since the first 787 entered commercial service in 2011, the Dreamliner family has saved more than 48 billion pounds of fuel.

The planes will have engines made by GE Aviation. The new engines will contribute to the 25 percent improved fuel efficiency per seat of the 787-10.
