An expert reflects on the COVID-19 outbreak

Bruce Aylward, who led an global mission to China to learn about the virus and China's response, said the specialists did not see evidence that a large number of mild cases of the novel disease called Covid-19 are evading detection.

"Do not mistake me: I am not downplaying the seriousness of the situation, or the potential for this to become a pandemic, because it has that potential", he said. "We found that only roughly 20% of the SARS-CoV epitopes map identically to SARS-CoV-2, and believe these are promising candidates". To put the case numbers in context of population size, China has a population of 1.4 billion, and the world population is 6.3 billion.

Two of the main reasons for the rapid increase in the number of cases are that the virus is spreading from one person to another and that the capacity to detect cases is improving.

The outbreak has also given prominence to the value of President Xi Jinping's vision on building a community with a shared future for mankind as the worldwide community needs to work together to eliminate the threat of the disease in order to uphold global public health security, they said.

South Korea, which with 1,261 cases has the most outside China, reported 284 new ones including a USA soldier, as authorities readied an ambitious plan to test more than 200,000 members of a church at the centre of the outbreak.

Labelling the outbreak a pandemic may also lead countries to roll out specific pandemic response plans, said Dr. Kamran Khan, an infectious disease physician and scientist at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. With a new case in Brazil, travel to China is not the only risk factor anymore.

While that may be the case, some experts say the need to communicate the situation clearly to countries around the world to ensure they prepare for more widespread transmission is essential. And WHO is providing tools to prepare, accordingly.

And operational support and logistics.

On Saturday I briefed a meeting of health ministers from African Union countries. The version of the software in use today was trained with more than 2,000 images of Covid-19 patients, says Chen. We are working on sending supplies to the other AU countries. How long will it take to develop a vaccine?

We are also continuing to strengthen our coordination with the UN Crisis Management Team.

We look forward to receiving monies pledged as soon as possible, because we have limited funding.

WHO can not provide appropriate public health guidance without disaggregated data and detailed line lists.

"Tourism's response needs to be measured and consistent, proportionate to the public health threat and based on local risk assessment...inline with WHO's overall guidance and recommendations", read the statement. We're communicating with ministers directly, there is some improvement, and we urge all countries to share this data with World Health Organization immediately.

"We are not just fighting to contain a virus and save lives", underscored Mr. Ghebreyesus.

A pandemic will result in global and U.S. recessions during the first half of this year.

Stigmatization, the United Nations health agency noted, could potentially contribute to more severe health problems, ongoing transmission, and difficulties controlling infectious diseases during an epidemic. We're in constant contact with the heads of the two organizations.

"For the moment, we're not witnessing the uncontained global spread of this virus and we are not witnessing large-scale severe diseases or deaths", he said during a media briefing.

The meeting stressed continuing to concentrate strength and resources on epidemic prevention and control in Hubei and Wuhan to contain the source of infection and cut off the routes of transmission.
