It wasn't immediately known if the two infected had participated in Carnival festivities. Cinemas and theatres were also ordered shuttered, including Milan's legendary La Scala.

The new virus, which originated previous year in Hubei province in China, causes a respiratory disease called Covid-19.

Xi defended the ruling Communist Party's response as "timely and effective" in a video conference with officials in charge of anti-disease work, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

Chen Yulu, a deputy governor of the People's Bank of China, said policymakers had plenty of tools to support the economy, and that they were fully confident of winning the war against the epidemic. The city has confirmed 69 cases of the virus, with two deaths. Taiwan also witnessed one death with 24 confirmed cases.

Another centre of infection has been the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Japan since February 3, with more than 630 cases accounting for the biggest cluster outside China. Several antiviral drugs have been applied in clinical trials against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and some have shown fairly good clinical efficacy, a Chinese official said.

Chinese authorities said the mainland had 397 new confirmed cases on Friday, down from 889 a day earlier. Several changes to how infections are counted, however, have made it hard to draw conclusions from the figures.

Late Thursday, B.C. health officials reported the province's sixth case of the disease, in a woman who had never visited China. The Wuhan Women's prison has reported 230 cases of the virus, while the Shayang Hanjin prison reported 41 on Friday.

More than 120 members of Shincheonji Church, a religious sect in the southern city of Daegu, have now been infected.

In the United States, 35 people have tested positive for the virus, including 18 who returned home from a quarantined cruise ship in Japan and one new case reported Friday in California.

With the new cases, 691 people have been infected on the ship, or almost one-fifth of its 3,711 passengers and crew.

In Japan, where the government is facing growing questions about whether it is doing enough to counter the virus, authorities had confirmed 773 cases by early Sunday evening.

However, Asian shares dipped as fears over the creeping spread of the disease sent funds fleeing to the sheltered shores of US assets, lifting the dollar to three-year highs.
