Melbourne-Sydney Train Derails, 2 Killed

A Sydney to Melbourne XPT train has been derailed north of Melbourne near the town of Wallan, with reports of multiple serious injuries and at least two fatalities.

The five carriage train, which was carrying 160 passengers, came off the tracks at about 7.45pm. There were around 160 people on board, according to operator NSW TrainLink South.

Photos posted on Twitter showed passengers standing next to the crumpled train with their luggage.

At least four carriages derailed and the locomotive turned on its side, Keith Pakenham of Country Fire Authority, Victoria told CNN.

Several other passengers were being treated for injuries, emergency services said.

A spokesperson for the CFA said three helicopters had now landed at the scene to transfer the injured, along with multiple ambulances.

"Stuff flew everywhere. Carriages crumpled at edges".

V/Line has confirmed that the train derailed approximately 500m north of Wallan train station.

"It's believed the train traveling from Sydney to Melbourne derailed near the Hume Freeway just before 8 p.m.", police in the state of Victoria said in a tweet.
