Japan and South Korea Report Big Jump in Novel Coronavirus Cases

The latest figures bring the total number of cases in China to over 74,000 with 2,004 deaths, three quarters of which have occurred in the Hubei provincial capital of Wuhan.

However, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the trend "must be interpreted very cautiously".

Almost a third of the more than 1,000 HIV positive people surveyed by UNAIDS said lockdowns and restrictions on movement in China meant they were at risk of running out of their HIV treatment in the coming days.

On top of tough steps taken to isolate Hubei, where the flu-like virus originated in a market illegally selling wildlife, state media reported the province would track down anyone who visited doctors with fever since January 20 or bought over-the-counter cough and fever medication.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Health Minister Patty Hajdu said Wednesday afternoon that 47 of the 256 Canadians on board the liner are infected.

Tedros warned that it was too early to tell if the decline would continue.

A US senator, Tom Cotton (R-AR), added fuel to controversial assertions on Fox News earlier this month when he noted that the lab was "a few miles away" from a seafood market that had a large cluster of some of the first cases detected.

Public Health England (PHE) have maintained the risk of coronavirus to the public as moderate.

The Diamond Princess has been quarantined near Tokyo since February 3, initially with about 3,700 people aboard.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Japan's efforts "may not have been sufficient to prevent transmission among individuals on the ship".

- Medical workers are the backbone force in defeating the epidemic, and it must be ensured that they get full support. Around 300 Americans were evacuated from the vessel on Monday on an emergency flight arranged by the State Department and are now in quarantine. They began a 14-day quarantine when they arrived in the USA and will be monitored for symptoms of the virus.

From the start, experts raised questions about quarantine on the ship.

Medical workers check patients' information at Jiangxia temporary hospital that mainly adopt Traditional Chinese medicines to treat the patients in Wuhan on February 14, 2020. Local outlet NHK reported that about 500 people are due to leave the ship today.

Iran had confirmed the two cases - the first in the country - earlier on Wednesday.

Also among the new cases in South Korea is an 11-year-old girl, who is the daughter of the country's 20th case, a 41-year-old Korean woman who tested positive on February 5 while in self-quarantine.

The Cambodian government said the negative test results were from both passengers on the ship and in the city.

Also on Wednesday a South Korean government plane returned from Japan with seven evacuees-six South Koreans and a Japanese spouse-who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, according to national broadcaster KBS. Those still awaiting testing are not being held under any strict quarantine measures, Ministry of Health spokeswoman Dr.
