US Senator Admits He Met With Top Iranian Official

"For the last three years, there has been no diplomatic channel between America and Iran, and not coincidentally, tensions have escalated, most recently resulting in over 100 American soldiers being injured in an Iranian rocket attack on a USA base in Iraq".

Sen. Chris Murphy is defending a weekend meeting he held with Iran's foreign minister in Europe.

The 1799 law makes it a felony for unauthorized Americans to negotiate with governments in disputes with the U.S. Logan Act charges have only been filed against two people, both in the 19th century, and neither were convicted.

Murphy said meeting Zarif was important because it is "dangerous not to talk to one's enemies", adding: "I have no delusions about Iran - they are our adversary". Did you read about Senator or hear about... Murphy met with the Iranians? Well, they oughta find out about it.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Hatami said "the black box has sustained considerable damage; as such, the defense industries sector was requested to help with the repairs on the black box".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week he had "impressed upon" Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif that a complete and independent investigation into the shooting down of the airliner had to be carried out.

In it, Brownlee asks Gates about efforts to fight climate change with clean energy products, like Tesla's suite of electric cars. Gates said he'd ordered the "very, very cool" vehicle during an interview with YouTuber Marques Brownlee, published Friday.

'If they met, I don't know what they said.

"He's the foreign minister for a country that shot down an airliner and has yet to turn over the black boxes", said Pompeo, referencing Tehran's shooting down of a commercial airliner on January 8, resulting in the deaths of 176 passengers.

Murphy's meeting with an American foe drew criticism before it was confirmed by the senator.

Perhaps expecting criticism for the meeting from the administration, Murphy wrote that he 'cannot conduct diplomacy on behalf of the whole of the USA government, and I don´t pretend to be in a position to do so. "If we want to talk to Iranians, they know how to reach us and they don't need to go through an intermediary". Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Rob Portman of OH and John Barrasso of Wyoming met with Zelensky last week before heading to the Munich Security Conference in Germany. The Trump administration reimposed crippling sanctions on Iran as part of its "maximum pressure campaign" on the Islamic republic.

Murphy has been a harsh critic of the administration's policy toward Iran.

Tehran and Washington came close to an open conflict in January, when a US drone strike in Iraq killed Iran's top general.
