Elon Musk Called Bill Gates 'Underwhelming' for Buying Porsche Instead of Tesla

Elon Musk took to Twitter earlier today to let everyone know that his recent conversations with Bill Gates have been "underwhelming". He called the passenger-car industry "one of the most hopeful" sectors taking action in this regard.

In it, Brownlee asks Gates about efforts to fight climate change with clean energy products, like Tesla's suite of electric cars.

During the interview, the 64-year-old tech grandee discussed the state of electric cars in general, noting that their range still falls below that of traditional gasoline vehicles.

"Tesla, if you had to name one company, that's helped drive that, it's them", Gates said.

Gates said he'd ordered the "very, very cool" vehicle during an interview with YouTuber Marques Brownlee, published Friday. The Porsche Taycan's top model Turbo S speeds up 0 to 100km in just 2.8 seconds and is the first electric auto from German automobile manufacturer Porsche.

"That's my first electric auto, and I'm enjoying it a lot", he said.

He said that if somebody wants to travel a long-distance they would face problems due to "pervasiveness of recharging" the battery.

The Tesla CEO's commentary on Porsche's Taycan has been mixed.

But when it comes to driving range, it's obviously not true that this is necessarily a problem for electric cars - although it can be for some (let's set aside the fact that most of the time people drive less than 50km a day).

Still, Gates and Musk have more insights in common than the Tesla CEO might like to admit.

Starting at $103,800 (about R1.5 million), the Porsche Taycan is Porsche's first all-electric vehicle and represents a direct rival to many of Tesla's models.

Porsche did however end up reducing at the Taycan's launch its max charge rate 250kW (it says it will enable 350kW charging in 2021) - the same top rate as can be achieved at Tesla's new V3 Superchargers.
