9-year-old boy presumed dead after falling into Lake Erie

Police were called to an area of the lake near Peacock Point, about 60 kilometres south of Hamilton, late Saturday afternoon amid reports that as many as two children had fallen through the ice. He can't even imagine what the family is going through, he said. The people inside were able to rescue the 8-year-old.

On a GoFundMe page set up by Rebecca Brunke - the cousin of the boy's mother - Alex is called "a hero".

A 10-year-old girl who was with the boys ran for help and a man and woman were able to pull the 8-year-old to safety but the other boy did not surface. "It's an honour to know this courageous boy", Brunke wrote. "His friend survived. Today recovery searchers are looking for Alex to recover him".

A 9 year old did not resurface.

Officers immediately began searching the shoreline and the OPP's underwater rescue team searched for hours.
