Petra Kvitova beats van Uytvanck in 3 sets in St. Petersburg

Petra Kvitova advanced to the quarterfinals at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy by beating Alison van Uytvanck 7-6 (1), 1-6, 6-2 on Thursday.

Bertens is in her first singles final of the year, although she was a beaten finalist, together with Ashleigh Barty, in the doubles in Brisbane.

The pair have met once before, in the semi-final at 's-Hertogenbosch previous year, Bertens winning in straight sets in front of her home crowd. But we should give credit to "paper" favorite in the Netherlands: Bertens after winning the first set (6:4), managed to turn the game around in the second - 7:6. Bertens last successfully defended a title in Nuremburg in 2017.

The world No. 8 dominated the first set before losing the second to an inspired Alexandrova, but found her rhythm in the decider where she lost only three points on her serve to close out the victory.

‘I’m really sorry!’ Kiki Bertens apologizes for knocking out THREE Russians at home St. Petersburg Open

20 year old Rybakina is in her fifth WTA final in seven months, and she has already won two of then, in Bucharest last July, and in Hobart in January.

In the semifinal, she'll face another Russian, Ekaterina Alexandrova, who has won 16 of her past 17 matches. Should Sakkari win the tournament in St. Petersburg, she would rise to number 18 in the next WTA rankings.

The first semifinal on Saturday will pit eighth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan against sixth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece, who knocked out top seed Belinda Bencic on Friday.
