Messi, Hamilton win big Laureus Award

It was announced on Monday that Messi along with F1 racer Lewis Hamilton have won the award.

South Africa's National Rugby Team were also big winners of the night after their 2019 Rugby World Cup triumph earned them the Team of the Year award, beating off competition from 2018/19 UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool.

This is the first time a footballer has won the award and also the first occasion in the event's 20-year history when the jury reached a tied decision.

Messi did not travel to Berlin for the prize and sent a message of thanks by video.

However, for his great achievement Kipchoge won the 2019 World Athletics Athlete of Year award, the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year and 2019 Safaricom Sportsman of the Year Award (SOYA).

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi was joined on stage by six South African team-mates to collect the trophy.

German NBA star Dirk Nowitzki, who retired last year after a 21-year career in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to basketball.
