He is in serious condition, injuries non life-threatening

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman was rushed to the hospital earlier tonight after a horrifying crash in the final lap of the Daytona 500.

On behalf of Newman's family and team, he read a statement that said doctors have indicated that the injuries are non-life threatening.

NASCAR executive Steve O'Donnell provided an update on Newman's status to reporters.

Newman surged to the lead on the last lap of the race - which was delayed from Sunday because of rain - with the help of Ford teammate Ryan Blaney.

Before going off the air, the Fox television broadcast said that Newman was being taken by ambulance to a Daytona area hospital. It appeared the entire roll cage created to protect his head had caved.

The win for Joe Gibbs Racing came as Ryan Newman was wrecked as the leader and crossed the finish line with his vehicle on its roof, engulfed in flames.

Social media users ripped Hamlin after he did doughnuts to celebrate his victory. Team owner Joe Gibbs repeatedly apologized for celebrating, saying the team did not realize the severity of Newman's wreck. "I was focusing on our auto, and everybody started celebrating around us".

Health Ministry officials said they have now tested 1,723 people on the ship, which had about 3,700 passengers and crew aboard. And the purpose-built hospital in Zhejiang's Wenzhou City has been treating coronavirus patients since the end of January.

Denny Hamlin defended his Daytona 500 title on Monday after a wild finish on the final lap of overtime and a photo finish. "I kind of went low and he blocked that and so I was committed to pushing him to the win and have a Ford win it".

Hamlin's win past year was a 1-2-3 sweep for Joe Gibbs Racing and kicked off a yearlong company celebration in which Gibbs drivers won a record 19 races and the Cup championship.

It was the first Daytona 500 without restrictor plates since 1991.

"We pushed Newman there to the lead and then we got a push from the 11 ..."

Hamlin won after two red flags and two overtimes.
