Assault weapons ban tabled by Virginia Senate Committee

The Virginia State Senate rejected a measure to ban the sale of some semi-automatic weapons and large magazines.

The bill would have prohibited the sale of AR-15 style rifles and banned the possession of magazines holding more than 12 rounds.

Virginia's House of Delegates passed HB961 by a vote of 51-48 on Tuesday.

Cheers erupted in the committee room packed with gun supporters as senators voted to put the bill on hold for a year so that the state's crime commission could further study the issue, the Associated Press reported.

The vote is a setback for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat who introduced the legislation as part of a package of eight gun violence prevention measures in a July 2019 special session of the Virginia Assembly following a mass shooting in Virginia Beach. This newest campaign will focus on pressuring competitive state legislatures, including in Arizona, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, to move forward on gun safety legislation.

Last month tens of thousands of gun-rights activists-some in tactical gear-from around the country descended on the Capitol in Richmond and the surrounding area to protest. Gun owners have accused the governor and others of wanting to confiscate commonly owned guns and accessories from law-abiding gun owners.

However moderate Democrats in Virginia's Senate said they were uncomfortable with the legislation.
