1100+ Ex-DOJ Staff Call on Attorney General Barr to Resign

1100+ Ex-DOJ Staff Call on Attorney General Barr to Resign

The statement went on to say career attorneys should report any troubling actions they see to the department's Inspector General. Trump then praised Barr for "taking charge" of the Stone case.

The letter comes days after some Democratic senators pressed for Mr. Barr to resign, and after the New York City Bar Association said that it had formally reported the Attorney-General's behaviour to the Justice Department's inspector-general.

Th upheaval at the Justice Department began when all four federal prosecutors who took the case against Roger Stone to trial withdrew from the case Tuesday afternoon after Barr overruled their sentencing recommendation hours after the President criticized it on Twitter.

Barr has said he did not talk to the president about the Stone sentence, but current and former Justice Department officials have criticized the attorney general sharply.

'It is unheard of for the Department's top leaders to overrule line prosecutors, who are following established policies, in order to give preferential treatment to a close associate of the President, as Attorney General Barr did in the Stone case, ' said the letter, published on the website Medium.

Amid backlash over the Department of Justice pushing to reduce Roger Stone's recommended sentencing, Fox News contributor Andy McCarthy on Monday described the controversy surrounding the case as "nonsense".

"She's only bound by the statutes that Stone was convicted on so she could give him zero years, she could give him 50 years, she could give him anything in between", he said, explaining that prosecutors and department senior officials issued "non-binding recommendations".

The group claims that Barr has done the president's bidding and that those actions have caused damage to the Department of Justice.

Democrats blasted the department's shift in the high-profile case involving Stone, whose friendship with Trump dates back decades.

"I'm not going to be bullied or influenced by anybody. whether it's Congress, a newspaper editorial board, or the president", Barr said.

The sharp denunciation of Barr underlined the extent of the fallout over the case of Roger Stone. And as the President widened his attacks on law enforcement, Mr. Barr publicly reproached the president, saying that Mr. Trump's statements undermined him as well the department.

Asked whether he agreed with the position of his one-time colleagues, former federal national security prosecutor Joseph Moreno said that while the situation is serious, it does not pose a critical threat to maintaining an impartial DOJ. "I can not do my job here at the department with a constant background commentary that undercuts me".

Prosecutors who now work at the department should withdraw from cases that involve abuses or political interference, the lawyers said.

Even as the lawyers condemned Mr. Barr on Sunday, they said they welcomed his rebuke of Mr. Trump and his assertions that law enforcement must be independent of politics. "I'm gonna do what I think is right".
