With two more tested positive, the number of Indians infected with the virus on the ship has risen to five.

"This included 2 Indian crew members who have been transferred to medical facilities for necessary treatment and quarantine".

Fauci said in an interview that aired Sunday with CBS News' Face the Nation that 40 Americans who were traveling on the Diamond Princess "have gotten infected" and are "going to be in hospitals in Japan" as evacuation plans to get Americans on the vessel back home are underway. It said the condition of all Indian nationals being treated for COVID-19 was stable and improving.

The United States has started evacuating its citizens from the coronavirus-hit cruise ship Diamond Princess, which has been docked off the Japanese port of Yokohama since 3 February.

It should be noted that the virus has killed more than 1,000 people and has infected nearly 46,000 worldwide, with eight cases from Britain.

"The embassy is in constant touch with on board Indian nationals who are successfully braving out the situation and understand public health safety in such situations", the statement said.

Menard said her parents were on the last day of their month-long tour of Asia when they learned the boat was under quarantine.

The Embassy said it was making efforts for early de-boarding of all the Indians from the ship after the end of the quarantine period and was in discussions with the Japanese government and the ship management company for the disembarkation modalities and welfare of Indians.

An announcement aboard the Diamond Princess, where 3,700 passengers and crew have been held since February 3, told Americans to get ready to disembark on Sunday evening for charter flights home.

Among the 400, 14 has tested positive for coronavirus and were placed in isolation chambers on board the flight.

The couple are among the 67 new positive cases of COVID-19 virus detected aboard the ship, which has been under quarantine at a port city southwest of Tokyo since February 5, according to a statement issued Saturday from Jan Swartz, president of the cruise line.

The viral outbreak that began in China has infected more than 67,000 people globally, mostly in the central Chinese province of Hubei.

In mainland China, more than 1600 deaths have been reported from the virus.
