Vehicle bomb blast outside military university in Kabul

An interior ministry said that a suicide bomber inside a vehicle attacked military academy in Kabul leading to the death of at least six.

The attack happened at a police checkpoint near the entrance to the Marshal Fahim Military Academy, located on the outskirt's of a western Kabul neighbourhood, he said.

The Taliban has not attacked any major regions or cities in recent times to maintain the talks with the US.

There was no immediate response from Washington on the ultimatum, which appeared created to focus the negotiations on Taliban demands.

The residents who live closeby confirmed the attack to a news agency and said that the explosion rocked their house. We also heard gunfire afterwards.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said a suicide bomber struck in Kabul's Qambar Square area during the morning rush hour.

Esper in December described the conflict as being in "a state of strategic stalemate" that can only be settled with a negotiated settlement between the insurgents and central government in Kabul, which has been excluded from the peace talks so far.

"The great nation of Afghanistan wants an end to violence, a ceasefire and a lasting peace", he said in a statement.

In recent weeks the Taliban have refrained from attacking major urban centres in an effort to keep talks with the United States on track, but violence in the provinces has continued.

Four foreign nationals were among the wounded.

However, there has been dispute over the conditions that would lead to the U.S. troops finally leaving Afghanistan and ending a war that has been going on for 18 years.

The military academy has been the scene of several attacks in the past, including one claimed by the Islamic State group last May.

Rebuilding Afghanistan has cost hundreds of lives, according to a new report released Tuesday by a US government watchdog that monitors the billions of dollars Washington spends in the war-ravaged country.

"I think that we're making significant progress", O'Brien said at an event hosted by the Atlantic Council in Washington.

The Taliban have issued an ultimatum to Washington after weeks of talks with a USA peace envoy, demanding a reply on their offer of a seven-day reduction of violence in Afghanistan, or they would walk away from the negotiating table, two Taliban officials said Wednesday.
