Knicks, at $4.6 billion, NBA’s highest valued team

Despite struggling for form, New York Knicks continue to dominate the charts and have seen a 15% rise in its valuation.

The New York Knicks top the list for the fifth straight year, valued at $4.6 billion, offering some counter-evidence to the claim that team success is a primary driver of the figure. It also reported that the NBA's 30 teams generated a record US$8.8 billion in revenue last season, up ten per cent over the previous year.

The positive financial report comes on the heels of a brutal offseason that saw the NBA's controversy in China amount to an global incident and lead into ratings drops as more of the league's stars flocked to the West Coast and late-night tips. For the very first time, the typical National Basketball Association team is worth more than $2 billion, a 14% growth from this past year, Forbes reported.

The franchise valuations come one week after owner James Dolan re-assigned team president Steve Mills while stressing that he is not interested in selling the club.

Slightly behind the Knicks are the Los Angeles Lakers (US$4.4 billion) and the Golden State Warriors (US$4.3 billion). That places the $2.4 billion Dallas Mavericks and $2.1 billion Toronto Raptors on either side of of the average. That represented the biggest gain in value in the league.
