Egypt's Health Ministry has confirmed the first case of the new virus in the country, the second Middle Eastern nation affected and the first on the African continent.

The statement did not specify the person's nationality or what port of entry he or she arrived at in Egypt.

Megahed went on to say that the patient tested positive for coronavirus but hasn't shown any symptoms, adding that WHO was notified of the case immediately and that preventive measures were taken in coordination with the organization to quarantine the case and provide the needed medical attention, adding that the afflicted is in stable condition.

"The hospital now has two suspected cases who have been kept under isolation", confirmed hospital authorities.

The new name is taken from the words "corona", "virus" and "disease", with 2019 representing the year that it emerged (the outbreak was reported to the World Health Organization on 31 December).

Experts have raised concerns that countries with underdeveloped health systems - as can be found in Africa or Asia -would struggle to contain an outbreak.

This particular strain originated in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, the largest city in central China, and is in the same family as SARS and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome).

The new coronavirus infection has killed over 1,100 people and has sickened over 43,000, mostly in mainland China, but Tedros said "we have a realistic chance of stopping the #COVID19 outbreak".

Almost 64,000 people are now recorded as having fallen ill from the virus in China, with officials revealing that 1,716 health workers had been infected as of Tuesday.

Health authorities say it can be hard to distinguish between the two illnesses.

A dozen vaccines are also under development and will start their clinical trials within three months, according to Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the U.S. Some 600 people are now under quarantine.

"Whether the world will invest now in fighting the coronavirus outbreak, or pay more later to deal with its consequences", said the WHO chief, as per reports.
