The announcement of the new death toll comes after China said Wednesday that the number of new cases had slowed for a second consecutive day.

The commission said that it had begun including cases diagnosed through new clinical methods.

Hubei, the Chinese province at the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, reported 4,823 additional confirmed cases for Thursday, according to a statement from Hubei's health commission. The daily death toll nearly halved when compared to Wednesday's 14,840.

The death toll from the coronavirus is higher than the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2002-03, which is believed to have killed 774 people and sickened almost 8,100 in China and Hong Kong.

The number of reported cases has been rising more quickly after the hardest-hit province changed its method of counting them Thursday.

Health authorities on Friday moved 11 senior passengers who tested negative for the virus to health facilities, . after putting 3-thousand-600 passengers under two weeks of mandatory quarantine. The biggest cluster of infections outside of China has been on a cruise liner quarantined in a Japanese port, with 218 people on board confirmed as infected and hospitalized.

The MS Westerdam, carrying 1,455 passengers and 802 crew, docked in Sihanoukville late on Thursday.

"We've seen this spike in the number of cases reported in China, but this does not represent a significant change in the trajectory of the outbreak."

The outbreak has led to the firing of Jiang Chaoliang as the ruling Communist Party chief in Hubei, just days after the province's top two health officials were removed from their posts.

US President Donald Trump praised China over its response and said Washington was working closely with Beijing.

"I suspect but can't be certain that the underlying trend is still downwards", Professor Hunter said.

The 21-year-old student, going under the pseudonym Tiger Ye, said he first noticed symptoms on January 21 while at home in Wuhan, ground zero for the disease.
