Trump Urges Senate to Reject Curb on His Iran War Powers

"Just as we have successfully sent Iran this strong signal of our strength and resolve, a blunt and clumsy War Powers resolution would tie our own hands", McConnell said.

"We should not be at war with Iran unless Congress votes to authorize such a war", Kaine told CNN ahead of the vote.

The Senate could vote on the measure Thursday, with the possibility that five Republican lawmakers will join the minority bloc of 47 Democrats in the 100-member chamber to approve the non-binding resolution.

"This resolution is about Congress reclaiming its rightful role in decisions about war", Kaine said Wednesday on the Senate floor.

The Senate is now holding debates on the resolution after a majority voted 51-45 to advance the measure.

The Democrat-majority House of Representatives, however, seized the opportunity to pass a resolution saying that no offensive action against Iran can be taken without Congressional approval.

Why it matters: The bipartisan resolution, which has the backing of Sens.

The White House argues "there have been no further uses of force between Iran and the United States". Let's send the right message with our votes.

Finablr shares, also hit by the Muddy Waters allegations against NMC, were up 7.7% at 77.05 pence. KKR said it has not made a proposal nor discussed with NMC the terms of any possible offer.

The resolution will come just weeks after the US killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

The resolution has bipartisan support from Republican senators, including, Mike Lee of Utah, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Susan Collins of ME who have signed on as co-sponsors.

"This discrete and limited exercise of American power pales in comparison to the ways in which past presidents of both parties have routinely used presidential authorities to utilize our military might without prior consent of Congress", he continued. It does not prevent the US from defending itself from an imminent attack. "It's clearly stated in the Constitution".

The House has already voted on a similar resolution, passing it with bipartisan votes in the wake of the administration's targeted killing last month in Iraq with a USA drone of Tehran's top military commander, Qassem Soleimani.

"I've had a long-standing opposition to the War Powers Act".

The second bill repealed the 2020 Authorization of Military Force (AUMF) resolution that has been broadly used by presidents of both parties to justify USA military actions overseas.

While Kaine's resolution in theory should be able to easily pass the House and then go to the president's desk, Trump is expected to veto it. Democrats lack the two-thirds votes necessary in both the House and Senate to overturn such a veto.

Calling himself a "huge fan" of Trump's foreign policy, Lee said the resolution supported Trump's goal of limiting military action.
