Some coronavirus test kits shipped around United States are flawed, CDC claims

At least some of the testing kits that were sent across the US and to dozens of other countries aren't working properly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced during a news conference today (Feb. 12).

In this photo released by Xinhua News Agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping, centre, wearing a protective face mask waves as he inspects the novel coronavirus pneumonia prevention and control work at a neighbourhoods in Beijing, Monday, Feb. 10, 2020.

He or she will remain so until the Maine CDC receives the patient's test results from the CDC's headquarters in Atlanta.

Last week, CDC announced it had begun shipping more than 200 kits to laboratories throughout the country.

The CDC is now sending all states a new supply of the ingredient linked to the flawed kits, regardless if they have reported issues with the kits or not.

The US Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS's) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) will expand an existing partnership with New Jersey-based Janssen Research & Development, part of Johnson & Johnson, HHS said yesterday in a news release.

She added that the CDC, in its outbreak planning, isn't counting on a drop in virus activity as the weather warms.

During trial runs in some states, the kits produced results that were "inconclusive", said Dr. Messonnier.

At today's media briefing, Messonnier said a few people with symptoms on the flight were immediately transported to the hospital and that a system for matching individuals to lab specimens didn't work correctly. "There will likely be additional cases in the coming days and weeks, including among other people recently returned from Wuhan", the CDC said.

Covid-19 continues its relentless spread throughout China.

Two earlier US cases were found among evacuees flown to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in Southern California. Of the total confirmed cases, mainland China accounts for 59,539, while 1,361 of deaths are also on mainland China.

The patient was in isolation at a San Diego hospital, UC San Diego Health confirmed.

A number of test kits sent out by United States health authorities to labs across the country to diagnose the deadly novel coronavirus are faulty, a senior official said Wednesday.
