New infections of novel coronavirus drop for 8th consecutive day outside Hubei

TOKYO, Feb 13 (Reuters) - The yen rose from a three-week low against the dollar on Thursday after China's Hubei province, the epicentre of a coronavirus outbreak, reported a sharp jump in the number of new cases in a jolt to markets and sparking a flight for safe-haven assets.

"This outbreak could go in any direction", he added.

"Coronavirus" didn't really pinpoint any particular location or group of people, but its association with Wuhan and China as a whole has led to racism and suspicion against Chinese citizens.

The virus has killed more than 1,100 people and infected over 44,600 since it was first detected on December 31.

But the number of new infections nationally was down nearly 20% from the day before, from 3,062 to 2,478.

World Health Organization has activated a UN Crisis Management Team on 11 Feb 2020, to be led by general, Dr Mike Ryan who will coordinate the whole UN response.

The biggest cluster of cases outside China is on a cruise ship quarantined off the Japanese port of Yokohama, with 175 of about 3,700 people on board having tested positive.

The coronavirus has spread to two dozen other countries, having only been identified late a year ago in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

Newton's fit as part of that rebuild is a large factor in his future as well. "That's still the No 1 overwhelming thing". He also said he had an "unbelievable conversation" with Tepper, general manager Marty Hurney and new coach Matt Rhule.

Some 300 scientists and donors gathered in Geneva on Tuesday and Wednesday for the first worldwide conference on the virus hosted by the WHO.

Thailand refused to allow the Westerdam to dock this week after it had already been turned away by the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and Guam over virus concerns.

Cambodia finally agreed to let it land, the Holland America Line said.

"This is an example of the worldwide solidarity we have consistently been calling for", he said. "Outbreaks can bring out the best and the worst in people".

China's state news agency Xinhua called the epidemic a "battle that has no gunpowder smoke" and chided some officials for "dropping the ball" in places where it was most severe.

Dozens of low-level health officials across the country have also lost their jobs for failing to contain the spread of the epidemic, which emerged from an illegal wildlife market in Hubei's capital of Wuhan late previous year and has claimed more than 1000 lives.

Moves by Washington and other countries to curb visitors from China have offended Beijing, which says they are an over-reaction.

The Chinese yuan slipped against the dollar in offshore trade, while stocks in Asia also faltered as the latest update on the spread of the virus provided a grim reminder to investors that the epidemic remains a potent threat to the global economic outlook.
