Health authorities in China's Hubei province reported 14,840 new cases of coronavirus Thursday morning, bringing the nationwide total to almost 60,000.

State media said last week that Hubei will start recognizing computerized tomography (CT) scan results as confirmation of infections, allowing hospitals to isolate patients more quickly.

On Wednesday, officials in Hubei had reported just over 1,600 new cases-the lowest figure since the beginning of February. Most of the cases and most of the deaths are in Hubei province.

Hundreds of infections have been reported in more than two dozen other countries and territories, but only two people have died from the virus outside mainland China - one in Hong Kong and another in the Philippines.

Tedros said the World Health Organisation had chosen a name that did not refer to a geographical location, animals, an individual or a group of people to avoid stigmatisation amid a wave of anti-Chinese sentiment.

The new numbers in Hubei appear to burst that bubble, bringing official statistics closer to reality.

Pressure on local officials for their perceived incompetence has mounted particularly after the death last week of a Chinese doctor who was punished by Wuhan authorities for raising the alarm about COVID-19.

World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva that the numbers "must be interpreted with extreme caution", adding: "This outbreak could still go in any direction".

There are now 169 confirmed cases on the Diamond Princess, quarantined in the port of Yokohama, near Tokyo, among its 3,711 passengers and crew.

Dr Tedros also praised Cambodia for taking in the Westerdam, a United States cruise ship that had earlier been turned away from ports in Japan, Thailand and Taiwan despite having no sick patients on board.

A number of major events have been postponed or cancelled, including the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

A huge spike in coronavirus cases shocked Dow futures overnight as Hubei's confirmed cases soar over 60,000.

In Taiwan, which has reported only 18 cases of the virus, cabinet proposed a $2 billion package to help the economy deal with the impact of the epidemic.
