Coronavirus death toll leaps, party bosses in China's Hubei province sacked

Health authorities in Hubei announced an additional 242 deaths and 14,840 cases of the virus, known officially as Covid-19, as of Thursday morning, the largest single-day rise since the epidemic began and nearly ten times the number of cases confirmed the previous day.

The previous record rise in the toll was 103 on the February 10.

The spike in the death toll came a day after markets were cheered when China reported its lowest number of new cases in two weeks, bolstering a forecast by the country's senior medical adviser that the epidemic could end by April.

China has locked down an unprecedented 60 million people in an effort to curb the spread of the virus, which has hit hardest in the city of Wuhan and surrounding Hubei province. RNA, or ribonucleic acid, carries genetic information allowing for identification of organisms like viruses.

The Health Commission for Hubei Province has explained that the province recently conducted investigations on suspected cases and revised the diagnosis results, and newly diagnosed patients were diagnosed according to the new diagnosis classification.

"Presumably, there are deaths which occurred in people who did not have a lab diagnosis but did have a CT. It should have been done earlier", Wuhan resident Wang You told Reuters.

The latest figures from Hubei province will spark fears that an end to disruption in the world's second-largest economy is far from over.

Cambodia's decision to welcome the ship was praised by the Tedros Ghebreyesus, chief of the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an "example of worldwide solidarity".

Using CT scans that reveal lung infection would help patients receive treatment as soon as possible and improve their chances of recovery, the commission said.

Another cruise ship, the Westerdam, finally anchored Thursday off Cambodia after being turned away by several Asian and Pacific governments.

"I think we will find a vaccine". The province is at the epicenter of the outbreak. "Outbreaks can bring out the best and the worst in people".

Global business events scheduled outside China have also been affected by the outbreak, with the Mobile World Congress scheduled to be held in Spain's Barcelona later this month now canceled.

The Chinese Grand Prix was to have taken place in Shanghai from April 17 to 19.
