Coronavirus confirmed in San Diego, Calif.

The person arrived in the USA last week on a State Department flight from Wuhan, China and was hospitalized with three others after showing possible symptoms of the virus, CNN said.

UC San Diego Health spokeswoman Yadira Galindo said in an email that the patient left the hospital "the same way they arrived with all precautions taken".

"At this time there is no indication of person-to-person spread of this virus at the quarantine facility, but CDC will carry out a thorough contact investigation as part of its current response strategy to detect and contain any cases of infection with this virus" said Dr. Chris Braden of the CDC in a statement.

She was the 13th confirmed case in the United States, but the first patient who was evacuated from Wuhan to test positive for the virus.

Officials say she was isolated at the base for testing and sent back to a hospital after results came back.

Americans returning from Wuhan undergo 14 days of quarantine meant to prevent them from spreading coronavirus in the community.

The CDC says the team in Atlanta then reported that the samples tested negative, when three of those samples had not actually been tested.

Federal officials said a labeling error and a delay in testing caused the mixup that involved a coronavirus patient who was mistakenly released from a hospital back to quarantine.

Hundreds of people, including U.S. State Department employees and their families, have arrived at military bases in California, Texas and Nebraska aboard chartered flights from Wuhan, a city of 11 million that is the epicenter for the virus.

After being released from the hospital, they were transferred to the Miramar Air Base where all China evacuees will stay in quarantine.

China's National Health Commission (NHC) found that the number of new coronavirus cases has been trending down over the past few days.

But health authorities have cautioned that a negative test result from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention's laboratory does not necessarily mean someone will not get the virus.

"Some of the steps that the CDC have taken have really put us in better shape if there is widespread transmission in the United States", he said.

The patient will remain in the hospital until cleared by the CDC, which had approved the earlier discharge, according to UC San Diego Health.

More than 1,000 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported, all but two of them in China. A total of 42,638 people have been infected in China, the commission said.
