2nd case of new coronavirus confirmed among China evacuees

The person returned to America from Wuhan on February 7 and was under federal quarantine at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed Thursday. These kits could potentially avoid the delays that happen when labs have to send their samples to the CDC for testing, she said.

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, had said during a news briefing Wednesday morning that the global shipments had been sent, but later in the afternoon said she was mistaken and the test kits had not been distributed to other countries. "As soon as we are given the invitation, we are happy to do that", Messonnier said.

"Obviously, a state wouldn't want to be doing this test and using it to make clinical decisions if it isn't working as well, as perfectly, at the state as it is at [the] CDC", she said, adding the problem was linked to a certain ingredient in the test, as per The New York Times. Each kit can test 700 to 800 specimens from patients, said CDC.

Then, Wednesday night, a fourteenth patient was confirmed.

Other states, including IL, said the kits had produced accurate results and they were now doing conducting their own testing.

Meanwhile, the government is considering new tax measures with an aim to enhance investment, stimulate innovation and cut costs. Any incentives offered in a freeport would need to be tested against a number of stated objectives.

"Things may not always go as smoothly as we may like", noted Dr Messonnier.

The United States is working in close collaboration with Japanese health authorities to prevent the spread of the disease on the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined off Yokohama with some 3,700 people aboard, including some American citizens. It's responsible for the planning, coordination and conduct of immunization programs in the United States.

BARDA Director Rick Bright, PhD, said, "With emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19, speed is crucial to saving lives and reducing further spread of the virus".

Passengers board buses after arriving on an airplane carrying USA citizens being evacuated from Wuhan, China, at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, Calif., on January 29, 2020. The only confirmed evacuee cases were at Miramar, where about 200 people are being held under quarantine until all are cleared.

More than 1,300 people have died from the virus and over 60,000 have been infected - the vast majority in mainland China. At least one, a patient in Washington, has been released from the hospital.
