China's new virus cases fall again, deaths now exceed 1, 100

COVID-19 cases started to emerge in the last week of December 2019 in a seafood market in Wuhan City, Hubei province, in China. The team estimated that about 59,912 air passengers left Wuhan to a total of 382 cities outside mainland China two weeks before the city was locked down on January 23.

To date, it has infected more than 42,000 people in the country and killed 1,107.

The Indonesian government has imposed a travel ban to and from mainland China since February 5 as well as temporary halt in live animal imports from the country in an effort to prevent the deadly virus from spreading to the archipelago. The total number of cases in mainland China reached 44,653, although many experts say a large number of others infected have gone uncounted.

In Hong Kong, authorities evacuated part of an apartment block after cases among its residents raised suspicion the virus may be spreading through the building's plumbing. Speculation that higher-level officials could be sacked has simmered, but doing so could spark political infighting and be a tacit admission of responsibility.

He said viruses have "more powerful consequences than any terrorist action".

But he said there was a "window of opportunity to hit hard and stand in unison to fight this virus in every corner".

"To defeat this outbreak, we need answers to all those questions and more", Tedros said.

There have been 13 confirmed cases in the United States, including seven in California.

The Universal Postal Union, a United Nations agency for postal cooperation between its 192 member countries, said the flight suspensions would impact mail delivery "for the foreseeable future".

The researchers said that with the number of people who left the city and traveled to other countries, a global spread of the deadly virus is inevitable.

The virus does "not survive for long on objects".
