Warner beats Smith by one vote to win third Allan Border Medal

Warner's success caps off a significant redemption tale, with the aggressive opening batsman banned by Cricket Australia from holding a leadership position after the Cape Town ball-tampering saga.

However, he came back strong in the ICC World Cup 2019 and though had a poor Ashes series the same year; Warner scored heavily at home in Test matches against Pakistan and New Zealand, including a triple hundred.

Warner's triumph goes with his Alan Border medals from 2016 and 2017, with the three victories putting him in rare company, only one behind four-time winners Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke.

"I think we're moving in the right direction, we've got great leaders at the top, obviously from the CEO down to the two captains and Meg (Lanning) - you do a great job, sitting on the sidelines you don't realise how good of a job you guys do", he said.

"When it is that close, you really don't know so it's a big surprise to be honest", an emotional Warner said at the ceremony late Monday. Warner said his experiences in England past year, where he was able to shrug off a constant stream of abuse from crowds while never once retaliating, would be helpful memories.

"It's going to be great to go back over there, and I'm just really excited to get out there against South Africa and hopefully come home with a win".

An emotional Australia batsman David Warner on Monday said he let the country down but had people who stuck with at all times, reflecting back on the Sandpaper Gate that forced him into a 12-month ban. Although he had an excellent World Cup in England by being the highest scorer of the tournament.

Past year fast bowler Pat Cummins, who took 103 wickets across 35 games in this voting period, almost three per match, and is certain to again feature highly, secured the medal with 156. Despite missing out around the first five months of 2019 in worldwide cricket, Warner still finished as the sixth most global run-scorer in that year and most run-scorer among the Australian cricketers in that year. Maintaining the Ashes was fantastic - I did not perform as expected and I apologize for that, but I had a hunger and commitment to return and a desire to do my best for the team.

"It's hard for a man to stand up here and say a lot of nice words about people but you always seem to bring the best out of me and the kindness of my heart". He was just one run behind Indian opener Rohit Sharma.

Australian cricket's other highest individual honour went to star women's allrounder Ellyse Perry, who picked up her third Belinda Clark Award with 161 votes.

Warner also claimed the male International Twenty20 Player of the Year Award.
