Birds Of Prey underwhelms with $46m North American opening

Birds of Prey will see Margot Robbie taking on the lead in the DCEU movie, as she reprises her role as Harley Quinn.

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey is playing in theaters now.

Birds of Prey may have taken the top spot at the United States box office this weekend past, but it flew in way under expectations with a domestic opening of just $33.35 million. Internationally, the Cathy Yan-directed movie grossed $46.5 million, putting its worldwide total at $79.5 million so far.

ComicBook.com noticed the Birds of Prey title change through both Regal Cinemas and AMC Theatres, and ScreenRant confirmed it was at the request of the studio. Pictures did with the 2014 Tom Cruise-starrer Edge of Tomorrow after the film was released. They eventually started referring to the movie as Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow, and that's even how it's sold these days.

If these new efforts from the studio don't create an uptick or longer legs for Birds of Prey, then maybe it's the R-rating or disappointing track record for recent DC Comics movies (that aren't Joker) keeping audiences away.

Birds of Prey had the worst opening weekend for any film in the DC Extended Universe

With cohorts Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Gotham City detective Renee Montoya, played by Rosie Perez, she takes on Ewan McGregor's Black Mask.

Reception for the film suggested that "Birds of Prey" should have easily made that target, holding an 83% Rotten Tomatoes score with a B+ on CinemaScore and 4/5 on Postrak. If it was for Harley fans, I think they knew. Robbie also produced, alongside Bryan Unkeless and Sue Kroll. The film's executive producers are Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman, Geoff Johns, Hans Ritter and David Ayer. Entertainment, Birds of Prey is rated R for strong violence and language throughout, and some sexual and drug material.
