European Union sets out new criteria on enlargement post-Brexit

The European Commission hopes the streamlined rules will avoid further delaying the start of accession negotiations when aspiring members to what is now the 27-country bloc have met the conditions for such talks.

The EU's goal remains to expand to the six Balkan countries of Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia and North Macedonia, new EU enlargement commissioner Oliver Varhelyi said on Wednesday after France vetoed membership bids in 2019. The EU-Canada deal will remove 99% of tariffs and limited quotas, but Ottawa has not had to align its rules with the EU.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said he spoke with his British counterpart Boris Johnson and that both agreed to begin talks on establishing a post-Brexit free trade zone between Israel and the UK.

In a triumphant vision for the United Kingdom to become a campaigner and catalyst for free trade around the world, Johnson said the United Kingdom exit from the 27-person economic bloc meant that it would not accept all its rules because it open negotiations with countries around the world.

In a speech in Greenwich on Monday, Boris Johnson laid out his stance on upcoming negotiations with the EU.

Mr Johnson said he wanted a "suite of agreements" covering substantially all trade; an agreement on fisheries; cooperation in the area of internal security; and technical agreements covering aviation and civil nuclear cooperation.

"The question is whether we agree a trading relationship with the European Union comparable to Canada's or more like Australia's", the former covering goods and services, the latter meaning new tariffs and other barriers.
