Canada announces first confirmed ‘presumptive’ case of coronavirus in Toronto

French hospitals are treating three confirmed cases of the new coronavirus and more are likely, officials said.

But a growing number of other countries are reporting cases, mainly of people returning from China - especially from Wuhan.

China would normally be celebrating the Lunar New Year holiday this week, but Wuhan's eery quarantine calm deepened on Sunday as new restrictions banned most road traffic in the metropolis of 11 million. Wild and often poached animals packed together in Chinese markets are blamed as incubators for viruses to evolve and jump the species barrier to humans.

The United States announced on Sunday it would organise flights to evacuate diplmoatic personnel and other nationals from the area with a direct flight to San Francisco early next week.

China's central Hubei province, at the center of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, reported 13 new deaths caused by the new virus on January 25, state media CCTV reported on Sunday.

The U.S. will evacuate its diplomats and citizens from Wuhan, China on Tuesday, where an outbreak of a novel coronavirus began.

Health authorities in Beijing urged people not to shake hands but instead salute using a traditional cupped-hand gesture.

At least 41 people have died since the start of the outbreak, which has made over 1,300 people sick in China alone.

NSW Health said on Sunday afternoon a fourth person had tested positive, according to their preliminary test results, though more follow-up was needed.

India on Sunday said it is examining "all options" in consultations with the Chinese government to address the concerns of over 250 stranded Indians, including students, in Wuhan, the epicentre of the fast spreading coronavirus.

On Saturday, Hong Kong declared a virus emergency, scrapped celebrations and restricted links to mainland China.

Hong Kong Disneyland and the city's Ocean Park theme park were closed on Sunday. Entertainment venues and public transportation were shut down in Wuhan and 12 neighboring cities, including train stations, subways and the airport. Schools in Hong Kong that are now on Lunar New Year holidays will remain closed until Feb 17.

The Coronavirus is confirmed in Melbourne today - Australia's first case - and now Sydney faces its first diagnosis.

Health officials in Canada have been preparing for the arrival of the virus for weeks, with hospitals questioning patients about their travel and testing those with symptoms.

The CDC expects more Americans to be diagnosed with the newly discovered virus, which is believed to have an incubation period of about two weeks, as worldwide the number of confirmed cases nears 2,000. It can cause pneumonia, which has been deadly in some cases.

China's central government deploys hundreds of workers.


There is no vaccine for the virus and officials say the best way to prevent infection is simply to avoid being exposed to it.
