GOP Senators Call for Copy of John Bolton Book

GOP Senators Call for Copy of John Bolton Book

Donald Trump's defence team concluded its oral arguments in the US Senate impeachment trial on Wednesday, setting the stage for two days of questioning.

"There was no malicious intent", Mr. Philbin told senators.

Trump is accused of cheating in his 2020 reelection effort by pressuring vulnerable ally Ukraine to announce investigations into both Bidens and a debunked Russian conspiracy theory that Kiev helped the Democrats in 2016.

Jay Sekulow, the president's personal lawyer, said: "The bar for impeachment can not be set this low".

The trial will determine whether Trump is removed from office after being impeached by the Democratic-led House of Representatives last month on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress arising from his conduct toward Ukraine. "That's not what the framers intended", said Trump's personal lawyer Jay Sekulow.

The tweet was issued in response to the Times, which reported California's senior senator "became the first Democrat to suggest that she could vote to acquit (Trump) despite serious concerns about his character".

Contents of Bolton's book were leaked to the New York Times and, now that his version of events is public, it puts more pressure on the Senate GOP majority to extend the impeachment trial and bring in Bolton as a witness.

A vote is expected by Friday on whether to open the trial to new witnesses and evidence.

Bolton was known to be an assiduous note taker, carrying a yellow legal pad with him into White House meetings and typing up his written accounts each night.

But many say that although they know that they won't get into the convention center, they came down to Wildwood anyway. 'I think at this stage it's fair to say John Bolton has a relevant testimony'.

Democrats argue that a trial without testimony from Bolton would be a sham.

Sekulow quoted statements from Trump, the Department of Justice and the office of Vice President Mike Pence pushing back against Bolton's recollections about the hold on Ukraine aid.

Schiff pointed out that Bolton has offered to appear before the Senate if he is subpoenaed, adding that if it's Bolton's word against Trump's, only the former is willing to testify under oath.

While scoffing at the manuscript, Trump and the Republicans have strongly resisted summoning Bolton to testify in person about what he saw and heard as Trump's top national security adviser.

Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Trump's staunchest defenders, said they would call multiple witnesses, including the whistleblower whose complaint sparked the investigation into Trump's Ukraine dealings, and a Democratic consultant with Ukraine ties. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, said if Bolton is called, they will demand reciprocity to hear from at least one of their witnesses.

People were allowed to start going into the convention center by Tuesday afternoon - hours ahead of the 7 p.m. start time for the rally. "Looking at the manuscript makes sense to me", Sen.
