Mavericks trade for Willie Cauley-Stein

Mavericks trade for Willie Cauley-Stein

According to Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN, Dallas is sending a Utah 2020 second-round pick to Golden State for Willie Cauley-Stein.

The seven-foot Cauley-Stein has averaged 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds as a starter this season for the Warriors, his first with the Warriors after signing a two-year deal with the team in the off-season.

Those moves, the trade and release, will have to be completed before the Mavs can take on Cauley-Stein.

To make room for Cauley-Stein, the Mavericks waived Justin Patton, who was acquired in a trade with Oklahoma City on Friday, the same day Dallas agreed to the deal with Golden State.

The Dallas Mavericks might have found their replacement for Dwight Powell, who recently suffered a season-ending injury. In truth, Dallas traded virtually nothing - and an incredibly competitive franchise in Golden State still said yes.

Powell went down with a non-contact injury in the first quarter of a 110-107 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. Powell is out for the remainder of the season. He is a relatively well-known player, at least among informed fans, and he has good seasons. He has been coming and going between the Mavericks and the Legends of Texas, his G-League affiliate.
